です and saying what things are

です is the polite way to link two things. X は Y です means "X is Y". It is not really a verb, and it never changes for person, which makes it the easiest place to start.

• 私は学生です わたしはがくせいですवाताशि वा गाकुसेइ देसI am a student
• これは本です これはほんですकोरे वा होन देसThis is a book
• 田中さんは先生です たなかさんはせんせいですतानाका सान वा सेन्सेइ देसMr/Ms Tanaka is a teacher

Asking questions

Add か to the end. Nothing else moves. There is no inversion the way English flips "you are" into "are you".

• 学生ですか がくせいですかगाकुसेइ देस काAre you a student?
• はい、学生です はい、がくせいですहाइ, गाकुसेइ देसYes, I am a student
• いいえ、学生じゃないです いいえ、がくせいじゃないですईए, गाकुसेइ जा नाइ देसNo, I am not a student
